Top 10 Female Anime Characters

I’m sorry for the long wait (2 months to be exact), I was finishing up classes these past couple weeks so I’ve had other things on my mind. It should be more frequent from now on.

I can always appreciate when an anime can make a female character right. There are too many that use the girls of anime as fanservice or give them a cardboard personality. All of the girls I have chosen for this list are not fanservice characters, and have great character qualities. I tried to get a variety from anime I watched a while ago and more recent ones. I’ve noticed I tend to talk about the same shows constantly, so I’m trying to mix it up a bit if I can.

Haruhi Fujioka (Ouran High School Host Club)

haruhi

Many may know how I feel about this show. As it was my first anime, I will always hold it dear to my heart, and Haruhi was the first character I ever cosplayed as. And although I’ve broadened my anime spectrum, I always fall back to this show. Haruhi is a very strong character, and has dealt with many things going wrong in her life. The loss of her mother at a young age, going to a school knowing nobody, and being practically thrown into a club she had no intention of joining were all things she dealt with, but didn’t let ruin her life. She overcame these obstacles, and made the best of it. Plus she’s very outspoken and doesn’t let other people take advantage of her.

Tohru Honda (Fruits Basket)

tohru

Fruits Basket was one of my very first animes, and I watched most of it at a sleepover with my friends around four years ago. Since then, I’ve gone back to it and rewatched it one or two times, along with reading all of the manga (which is so much better I highly recommend it). Tohru Honda is such a sweet character, it’s hard to not like her. She’s caring and looks out for others even if they don’t ask her to. But the thing that impresses me the most about her is the fact she stays positive no matter what circumstance she’s in. Her father died when she was about two years old, and her mother died about six month before the show takes place, but she continues to see the good in everything, a trait I wish I had.

Maka Albarn (Soul Eater)

Maka4

As many know, I cosplayed as Maka last fall, so that already can tell you how I feel about this character. Before I watched this show, I had many friends who watched it, and they said I was a lot like Maka. They said this because at the time, I was straight-A student, and I loved reading. That’s all I knew about her before I watched it. After watching it, I saw that Maka is much more than a bookworm, but is caring, strong, and determined. She is constantly worried about Soul, since he would take any hit in place of her. She wishes he would let her take care of herself, so he doesn’t get hurt in place of her. She wants to increase her skills so she doesn’t have to rely on him for protection. She always wants to learn more, and to do better than she already is. I’ve heard some people find these things about her annoying, but I think she’s just looking out for her partner.

Shirayuki (Snow White with the Red Hair)

shirayuki

This show doesn’t get enough recognition. As well as the main character, Shirayuki, who is supposed to be a form of Snow White. There are similar traits between Snow White and Shirayuki, but not many. The main one I see is they both are loved by many people. Shirayuki is hard-working, and kind to everyone she meets. She gives people second-chances and believes they can change their ways to make themselves better people. I love how accepting and open-minded she is, as well as being so determined to commit to something, she does everything she can to achieve it.

Celty Sturluson (Durarara!)

celty

Celty is by far my favorite character from Durarara! She’s so unique, and her design was very creative. She initially comes off as being the mysterious dark character, but in the end is very kind and wary of her impact on others. She knows that she can be the cause of trouble at times, and does her best to reduce it. So many people are interested in her (being an Irish fairy without a head and all) but she hates having so much attention on her and wishes to live a peaceful life. It’s cool to see someone who is so different from others still manage to live as a normal person, and it’s very impressive.

Winry Rockbell (Fullmetal Alchemist)

Winry1

I’ve already done a post about Winry, but it was my first one and I doubt anyone has read it. So, I’ll explain myself here instead. Winry is a great character, due to her profession, caring nature, and determination. She’s a mechanic, which at the time period of the show was rare. While it has a World War 2 vibe about it, there are still few women shown with a profession that requires physical strength. Majority of the military were men, and all of the other mechanics excluding her grandmother were also men. Her talent is insane for her age as well, and her determination to make a better piece every time she updates Ed’s automail is admirable. She also is incredibly caring toward the brothers, worrying about them as they leave her behind. Overall, Winry is a sweet mechanic who deserves love.

Ochako Uraraka (My Hero Academia)

uraraka

I’ve seen Uraraka at the very bottom of people’s favorite My Hero Academia character lists, and I’ve never understood why. Sure, there are many other characters that are shown more throughout the show, but I’ve always been fond of Uraraka from the moment she came on the screen. She’s supportive of Izuku always, and will sacrifice herself so others can succeed. She always puts others first, even though she wants to be a hero just as badly as the others. Plus, she’s just a cute, bubbly girl, and who can hate that?

Kaede Kayano (Assassination Classroom)

kayano

Another character that I’ve always been fond of. Though, there was a moment I doubted her, but I won’t get into that for those of you who haven’t watched season two. Kayano was the first one to approach Nagisa during the new school year, and was very open to him. She’s friendly, and makes a good effort to help the others in their goals, even if her ideas fall flat. Though there’s another side to her (which again I won’t get into), I love her all the same. She learns from her mistakes and grows further as a person.

San (Princess Mononoke)

San

I just cosplayed as San on Saturday for Motor City Con in Detroit, so it’s pretty clear that I admire her. Princess Mononoke is my favorite Studio Ghibli film, as I explained in Top 5 Studio Ghibli Films, and though San is technically not the main character and is absent for much of the beginning, her screen time was not wasted. She is firm in her beliefs, and nobody can shake her from them. She lives among wolves, which has made her strong and fierce. Also, results in her hatred for humans, but love for nature. She knows the forest spirits by name, and protects them with her life. I think of her as the Japanese version of Disney’s Pocahontas, but much cooler.

Hiyori Iki (Noragami)

hiyori

I’m also working on a cosplay for Hiyori, though it won’t be ready until the fall. I feel that in the Noragami fandom, Hiyori is often overlooked. Everyone’s favorite tends to be Yato, which I can understand as he is the face of the show. But, Hiyori is really the main character, and much more amazing than most people realize. In her first encounter with a phantom, she didn’t hesitate to attack it before being told that she could be killed easily. And even after that, she still thrust herself in the heat of battle. All while in her school uniform. Her parents are also rich, being doctors and all, but this is easily forgettable because she breaks the rich girl stereotypes.

Honorable Mentions: Sophie Hatter (Howl’s Moving Castle), Riza Hawkeye (Fullmetal Alchemist), Touka Kirishima (Tokyo Ghoul)

I hope you liked my list, it was difficult to narrow it down to just ten. If you think there were others who should have made it on my list, feel free to leave me a comment, I love seeing other people’s opinions.

Again, I apologize for my hiatus. It was never intentional, it just happened. But, I should be back for good, and another post should be up this Friday, the 26th. School was bogging me down, and now that my college classes are over, I have much more free time. Also, I have joined OWLS, which will mean I can participate in the blog tours! I should have one for June’s tour, so look for me.

My Favorite Anime Couples

My Favorite Anime Couples

I figured that in honor of Valentine’s Day I would share some of my favorite pairings in anime. I understand that this is a somewhat touchy subject for some, if their favorite isn’t on here, or if I ship a character with someone different that what they feel. But I knew I would talk about it at some point, so why not now? Understand that I will not make fun of any person’s pairing preferences, as long as I don’t get any nasty comments. Thank you, we are all fans of the same fanbase. Be nice! 🙂 Continue reading

Review: Durarara!

Review: Durarara!

This is the show I am almost finished watching, and though I don’t have the conclusion yet, I’ve decided to talk a bit about it.  (I’m 2 episodes away from finishing it, don’t yell at me)

Now, I’ve heard about this show.  A LOT.  Mainly just from the fandom, so I saw pictures of characters and such.  I didn’t think too much of the show because I had literally no idea what it was about.  Then my friend watched some of it, explained a bit to me, and I was intrigued.  But it wasn’t until a year later that I started watching it.  And I have to say, I’m impressed.

This is really a “Don’t judge a book by its cover” kind of show.  The title tells you nothing, and even the description doesn’t do it justice.  Let me show you what Netflix says about it, “A young man looking for excitement moves to Ikebukuro, a district in Tokyo, where he finds a world of mystery in which the past and present mesh.”  That’s directly from Netflix, I DID NOT write that.

celty-shizuo

Celty Sturluson and Shizuo Heiwajima

So, yes, all that’s said is true, but it only focuses on one character, Mikado Ryugamine, and I don’t even consider him to be the true main character.  In fact, I don’t think any one character is the main character.  All of the characters in the show have some tie to all of the other characters, which is impressive to achieve.  In my head, I’ve counted 35 characters with names that all have some kind of relation to the main plot.  Some aren’t introduced until the second season (which is split into 3 parts), though.  I won’t focus on season 2 at all so that’s about 15 people I won’t be talking about.

There are 4 stories going on at once, roughly.  Some stories intertwine and separate through the show, so I can’t have a permanent group of people for each.

Basically you have the three high schoolers: Mikado, Masaomi, and Anri.  And then there’s Celty, Shinra, his dad (who kind of jumps in and out), and Shizuo (who’s also part of another story).  Then, I call them the “van group” because they travel in a van: Erika, Walter, Kyohei, and Saburo.  And the last group is Seiji, Namie, Mika, and Izaya, and Shizuo jumps in sometimes.  This isn’t really all of it, since it jumps around so much, but if I were to group them, this would be it for season one.  Season two has probably like 8 groups at least, but it still stays organized enough where I can understand what is going on.

The whole thing is so impressive since it started as a light novel series, written by Ryohgo Narita and illustrated by Suzuhito Yasuda.  Two people made this happen.  That’s insane.  Of course, they have to go through publishers who critique their work, but it’s just crazy that they could keep a story like this all organized.  I know there are many popular manga/anime that also have a ton of characters in them, but for how complex the plot is and to remember what each character has to do with it pretty nuts.  I have a hard time remembering the full names of just a few characters and what they have to do.  And some of them I don’t even give them full names.  In this, all 35 or so characters have a first and last name, and I’d say at least 10-15 of them have an online alias, first and last name.  I look up to these people.

Well, enough of my impressed ranting.  I’m sure those of you who don’t know the show would like a little bit of knowledge on what exactly is going on.

Alright.  So, like the Netflix overview said, this is somewhat of a mystery show.  With demons and faeries and gangs.  Which makes it like 10 times cooler.  So, in Ikabukuro, there’s this reputation of something called “color gangs.”  Examples of these are called the “Blue Squares” and “Yellow Scarves.”  Basically, they all wear something of that color so civilians can identify them.  But, Ikabukuro also has a notorious colorless gang called “The Dollars.”  People in the district constantly have to look out for suspicious people in case one of the normal civilians turns out to be a part of The Dollars.

That’s the gang part of it.  Now, for the faeries part.  Well, there’s really only one faery.  Named Celty Sturluson, who is a dullahan.  A dulluhan is an Irish faery who carries around its head and rides a shadow-type horse.  They are all female, and value their horses and heads.  Unfortunately for Celty, her head has been stolen and taken to Ikabukuro.  She rides around the district on a black motorcycle, which neighs like a horse.  She’s known as the “Black Rider” and people don’t know whether to be scared of her or not.

And, for the demons.  This doesn’t come until about halfway through season one, so if you want to skip this part to not spoil it, go on ahead.  I won’t be too specific with anything.

This isn’t like your normal “monster” type of demon.  This one is in the form of a sword, and possesses others into following it.  This becomes a very big problem near the end of the show, but isn’t really the main idea until season two.  This part of the show was really interesting to me, and might’ve been the reason I watched all the way to the end (well, almost the end).

And there you have it.  That’s what I think about Durarara!  Oh, you want to know what my favorite character is and who my least favorite is?

I know you probably weren’t asking, but I do have an answer for both.  One may be a bit shocking to those who like this show.

I’d have to say Celty is my favorite, but it took me a while to decide this.  She just made me laugh, and cry, and I felt deeply for her.  She is pretty lost without that major part of her, and she constantly is attacked while out doing deliveries ( I forgot to mention she delivers things).  Also, I’ve never heard of a dullahan, so I was interested when I heard of it.  I’m very into mythology and fantasy things, so that makes a lot of sense.

And, as for who my least favorite is, it’s actually Izaya.  I know a lot of people like him, but I just never got attached to him.  I never felt sorry for him, and he confused me.  I never knew his intentions and he flip-flops with whose side he’s on, so I could never tell if he was a villain or not.  So, don’t hate me, but I don’t like everyone’s favorite character.

Alright, so that’s the end of my review.  I’m having a bit of a hard time coming up with ideas, so if you have any tweet me or leave a comment.  My twitter is @letstalkanime1.  Oh, and not this upcoming weekend, but the weekend after, I’m going to an anime convention.  I’ll probably make a post about my experiences and maybe have some cool cosplay pictures.  And I’ll be seeing Vic Mignogna with my brother and possibly J. Michael Tatum and Monica Rial, so maybe pictures with them will be here too (all are FUNimation dub voice actors for those subbed fans out there).  But I have no promises.

Bye!

**As of 10/25 I finished this show, and let me tell you, it was quite an ending.**

**If anybody is curious, I generally don’t edit my posts so if you see run-on sentences and things like that, it’s because I like to leave it written how I think.  If that bothers anyone, let me know.  Thanks!**
