Top 10 Anime Openings

Top 10 Anime Openings

I thought this would be a fun post, something I haven’t really thought much about. And let me tell you, narrowing it down to just ten is very difficult. I had thirteen I wanted to include, but that’s a strange number to have for a list, so I had to eliminate three. Like most of my lists, this is not in any particular order, just the one I wrote them down in. I hate playing favorites, and many things I say are my favorite are really just one of many.

Everything on this list I love not only based on the way the song sounds, but also the visuals that are shown when the song is playing. So I’ll show a screencap of each opening and also a link so you can listen to it yourself. And some songs also have English covers I love, all by either Amalee or NateWantsToBattle, so I’ll include those links as well.

So, without further ado, my very favorite anime openings.

Soul Eater: Resonance, Opening 1

soul eater

You all know my love of Soul Eater. Between my user image, my cosplay tutorial, how many times I’ve mentioned it in lists, and my first OWLS post, I’m sure my obsession is clear. And like most people, I prefer the first opening to the second one. I think both songs have lyrics that definitely match the show very well, and in a way I feel that the first one is in Maka’s perspective, talking to Soul. And the reversal for the second opening. But I’ve always been more fond of the first song for its upbeat tempo.

My Hero Academia: The Day, Opening 1

mha

I really wracked my brain over this one. I knew I had to include a My Hero Academia opening, but I really didn’t know which one to have on this list. Everyone seems to like Opening 2, Peace Sign, but I really think the first one has a special place to me. Though I feel Peace Sign has better lyrics, this one has better music. Every time I hear it I know I’m about to watch an awesome superhero show. It’s so upbeat and I can’t help but bounce in my seat a little.

Prince of Stride: Strider’s High

prince of stride

I talked about how much I loved this opening in my Prince of Stride review, but I just love this opening so much I need to showcase it again. This show isn’t spoken of often, as it’s not an impactful sports anime, but I still think it’s worth a watch. I’ve never been a huge sports anime fan, but I really enjoyed watching this anime. At least watch the opening and look at the art, it’s just gorgeous. And the song itself is pretty catchy as well.

Yuri!!! On Ice: History Maker

born-to-make-history

Oh, big shocker this one’s on the list. I thought about replacing this one with something else, but I just love it too much. I’ve practically memorized every move of the routine, I love it so much. I just think this opening is so unique and though it gets plenty of recognition I just needed to say it again. It blows me away every time I watch it. As soon as I saw the opening, I knew this show was something special. I realize I’ve only made two posts on this show, which isn’t a whole lot, but I have ideas for maybe one or two in the future.

Haikyuu!!: Imagination, Opening 1

I jumped on the Haikyuu!! train, guys and I love it. I really didn’t think I would like it as much as I do. I’m only half way through season one, but I have already fallen in love with this show. Though my rambling about it will be saved for later. I just think the opening just matches the show so well, especially the lyrics if you’ve ever heard or read those. This song was probably what truly convinced me to watch this show.

Assassination Classroom: Question, Opening 3

assclass

Ah, Assassination Classroom. Another anime I’ve mentioned on multiple occasions. Though, when choosing which opening to use, I didn’t struggle in the slightest. I’ve always loved the way this opening sounded. I’m not entirely sure why this one specifically, but it just stuck out to me. I love all of the openings for this anime, they always have so much going on and I couldn’t ever skip them because I was trying to notice all of the effects that were going on in the background. And you can tell when it’s an Assassination Classroom opening because parts of the song are sung by different people so it feels like the class is really singing it.

Noragami: Hey Kids!!, Opening 2

noragami

Again, a show I’ve mentioned a lot. And I love the art that they use for the opening specifically. It’s all in black, gray, and white, except for the characters’ eyes, clothing, and the backgrounds. It’s such a unique way to do an opening, making it such a different style than the show. And I chose the second one specifically because of how it sounds, I initially didn’t like it as much as the first opening, but after listening a couple times, I loved this one more.

Black Butler: Book of Circus: Enamel

black butler

I’ve recently been having my heart ripped out by the Book of Circus arc of Black Butler. Any of you who have watched this part will understand what I mean by that. But I’m not here to talk about the show itself. This opening is so amazing. The visuals are very eerie and beautiful at the same time, perfect for the show. And the music begins sounding like an old arcade or festival game, and gradually goes into a drumbeat. It’s so perfect I just don’t have enough words to describe it.

Erased: Re:Re:

erased

I honestly would forget this show even exists if it weren’t for the opening. This is an anime that I wouldn’t be able to rewatch, due to the element of surprise being so important in enjoying the show. And because of that, it gets lost among the anime I’ve seen and can rewatch if I desire to. But, this is about the opening. I again love the style of it. Some pieces look like they are straight from the show, while other parts are in a completely different style. And though there are a lot of spoilers if you look closely, it’s really just visually appealing.

Seraph of the End: X.U, Opening 1

seraph of the end

I’ve expressed how unimpressed I am with this show in my previous post, which I recommend you read. But there’s something about the opening that I really love. The lyrics fit right into the show, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this song was written for the show. My favorite part of the visuals is in the beginning of the opening, when the vampire queen is spinning and the feathers at her feet twirl around. I’ve always loved the way some animes use rose petals, cherry blossoms, or feathers as effects. It’s so pretty to look at.

Some honorable mentions are: Ouran High School Host Club: Sakura Kiss, Blue Exorcist: In My World, Durarara: Traitorous Sunset, Fullmetal Alchemist: Again, Death Parade: Flyers, Attack on Titan: Shinzou wo Sasageyo

Hope you guys enjoyed this fun little list. I figured I would have something easier to prepare for this week since over the weekend I will be out of town again. I’m trying to post on Fridays, and clearly today isn’t Friday. And next week will be my OWLS “Bloodlines” post so be sure to check that out. I’ll put a link here in case you’re reading after it’s published.

Thanks for reading!

Top 10 Male Anime Characters

I did a top 10 of female characters a while back with the full intention of doing this post immediately after, but I guess I forgot about it. Well, here it is now. I’ll have to say this list was much easier to compile than Top 10 Female Anime Characters, for reasons I’m somewhat ashamed of. I’ve realized that when I become attached to a male character, they tend to have one or more of the following traits: short stature, short temper, and blond hair. Which almost every character on this list falls into.

As with many of these lists, this is not in any specific order. I just can’t bring myself to rate these guys at all. I love them all, okay?

I’m gonna try to keep my fangirling to a minimum since all of these characters are ones I love for so many reasons, and one tends to be their, ah, character design.

Yukine (Noragami)

YUKINEEEE

There are many lovable characters in Noragami, but Yukine was the one that I grew fond of. His past is a mystery to everyone, because as a regalia, his memory from his previous life had been wiped. But it’s clear he had a rough past, and since he’s only fourteen, the way he handles things is a bit rash. He tends to go through rebellious phases, which hurt Yato severely, so they have to work together to get Yukine through whatever it is that’s bothering him. He’s far from a perfect character, he has a ton of emotional problems, but isn’t that what makes an interesting character?

Kyo Sohma (Fruits Basket)

KYO KYO

Kyo is another emotionally unstable one, though he tends to be more consistent with how he feels. I talked a lot about Kyo in my recent OWLS post, which you can read here. But, I probably should explain why I like him so much anyway. He has pretty bad anger issues, due to his zodiac animal. Being the cat means he’s left out of things. He’s ignored, called nasty names, and generally is treated less than human. Really, I feel bad for him. But in the manga, he learns that there are still people who can accept him for who he is, and he should ignore those who don’t. He’s a character who grew in both the anime and manga, and because of that, I love him a lot.

Yuri Plisetsky (Yuri!!! On Ice)

aw-yurio

Oh boy, I’m gonna have a hard time staying calm for this one. I’m still so absorbed in this show and it’s been like six months now. But, anyway, of the three main characters, I became the most attached to Yurio. Not because I relate to him, really, but more just he kinda impresses me. His skill is insane for his age, and his determination is so intense, it’s hard to not admire. I’m only two years older than him and I feel I’ve done nothing with my time when watching what he can do. I shouldn’t be comparing myself to an anime character, I know that. He’s just so impressive.

Tamaki Suoh (Ouran High School Host Club)

tmiaki

And now this idiot. Gosh, I became obsessed with this show three years ago and I still bring myself back to this character. He seems like just a pretty face on the surface, but his heart is so kind. He’s so open to everybody, it doesn’t matter who you are. He flirted with Haruhi, whom he thought was a guy for one thing, and knew was poor. But he still felt he was obligated to make her happy in any way he could. He was open to learning about the way people like Haruhi lived, which is not something most rich people do. Tamaki honestly is someone who people should strive to be like: open-minded and accepting of all people.

Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist)

edward elcris

Ah yes, another angry short blond. Well, more of the original angry short blond but anyway. I know you’ve all probably seen a million things about Ed considering how popular this show is and how long it’s been around, but again, I just kind of attached myself to him. I even have a hoodie that looks like his coat. I don’t think I need to go into detail about him here.

Izuku Midoriya (My Hero Academia)

izuku

And the cute little hero that has stolen all of our hearts. This show shocked me so much, since it looked like a lame shonen, but in reality is such a beautiful story about believing in yourself. Izuku is honestly so determined and open-minded that he can set his mind to something and never lose sight of it. When the kids bullied him for not having powers, he showed them that even people without powers can be heroes too. He’s such an inspirational character, showing that even people who do not fit into the norm can do amazing, honorable things. We all could learn a thing or two from him.

Shoya Ishida (A Silent Voice)

shoya

Now, I didn’t really think about adding him initially, but I’ve been rereading the manga so I can watch the movie and compare. And I realized how amazing Shoya is. Yes, he was a terrible bully and did some awful things, but he has learned from those mistakes. Every time someone brings it up again, he regrets it all over again. He’s the definition of a troubled character. He was close to giving up everything, but continued on and began fixing all of the wrongs he did. It’s a common saying that either “people change” or “people never change.” This manga/movie show both, and Shoya proves that when you are conscious of your problems, you really can change.

Soul Evans (Soul Eater)

Soul

This seems like an obvious choice, considering my clear love of Soul Eater. Now, at first I wasn’t sure if I should put Soul or Death the Kid on here, but it seems like Soul tends to not get enough love. So, here’s Soul. I never realized how great of a character he was until I began making my Maka cosplay last year and was watching the show to get references. Soul is the greatest partner Maka could ever ask for. He is so willing to take the punches she would be taking if he weren’t there to protect her. Though she never seems grateful for the protection he provides, he knows that it’s what he should do, so he does it without question. He looks out for her, as any good friend and partner should.

Nagisa Shiota (Assassination Classroom)

Nagisa yeh

Were you expecting Karma? I know he’s the fan favorite, and don’t get me wrong I love him too, but Nagisa beats him by a little bit. Kinda because of the whole thing where I like short characters. But there’s more than just physical appearance, I’m not that shallow. I’ve noticed many people think Nagisa is a flat, boring character, which I can see, and you’re entitled to think whatever you want. But really, I think he learned a lot by the end of the show. He began having no self-confidence whatsoever, being stuck in the class of delinquents and slackers. But by learning his abilities with the help of Koro-sensei, he finally sees his potential. A bit of a spoiler, but it’s not all that big, he ends up pursuing a teaching career. Nobody with a lack of self-confidence would be able to do this. He knows his skills enough to improve on them until he can teach others. Kind of ranted about this one, but as someone who wants to teach as well, this character hits a bit close to home.

Ken Kaneki (Tokyo Ghoul)

kneki

I’ve never actually watched this anime, but I’m on the eighth manga, and I don’t know if I’m just not far enough yet, but I prefer Kaneki with his black hair. Is this just me? I had to search “Kaneki black hair” to get this picture because there was only the white hair. Okay, enough about that. I really can’t say a ton about him, considering I’m on roughly episode two of season two. I’ve got a bit to go, so I’m unsure of everything that happens. But I just, accidentally, grew attached to him. Which I kind of wish I hadn’t because geez, my feelings were hurt reading the manga. He’s so sweet, why would you hurt him? And he’s adorable too.

I hope you all enjoyed this list, it was fun to put together. I feel I went a bit more in depth in this one than in my female character one, and I’m not sure why. I expected to talk a lot about how cute all of these guys are, which is true, but I delved a bit deeper.

I love doing these character posts, and I can promise more in the future.

Top 10 Female Anime Characters

I’m sorry for the long wait (2 months to be exact), I was finishing up classes these past couple weeks so I’ve had other things on my mind. It should be more frequent from now on.

I can always appreciate when an anime can make a female character right. There are too many that use the girls of anime as fanservice or give them a cardboard personality. All of the girls I have chosen for this list are not fanservice characters, and have great character qualities. I tried to get a variety from anime I watched a while ago and more recent ones. I’ve noticed I tend to talk about the same shows constantly, so I’m trying to mix it up a bit if I can.

Haruhi Fujioka (Ouran High School Host Club)

haruhi

Many may know how I feel about this show. As it was my first anime, I will always hold it dear to my heart, and Haruhi was the first character I ever cosplayed as. And although I’ve broadened my anime spectrum, I always fall back to this show. Haruhi is a very strong character, and has dealt with many things going wrong in her life. The loss of her mother at a young age, going to a school knowing nobody, and being practically thrown into a club she had no intention of joining were all things she dealt with, but didn’t let ruin her life. She overcame these obstacles, and made the best of it. Plus she’s very outspoken and doesn’t let other people take advantage of her.

Tohru Honda (Fruits Basket)

tohru

Fruits Basket was one of my very first animes, and I watched most of it at a sleepover with my friends around four years ago. Since then, I’ve gone back to it and rewatched it one or two times, along with reading all of the manga (which is so much better I highly recommend it). Tohru Honda is such a sweet character, it’s hard to not like her. She’s caring and looks out for others even if they don’t ask her to. But the thing that impresses me the most about her is the fact she stays positive no matter what circumstance she’s in. Her father died when she was about two years old, and her mother died about six month before the show takes place, but she continues to see the good in everything, a trait I wish I had.

Maka Albarn (Soul Eater)

Maka4

As many know, I cosplayed as Maka last fall, so that already can tell you how I feel about this character. Before I watched this show, I had many friends who watched it, and they said I was a lot like Maka. They said this because at the time, I was straight-A student, and I loved reading. That’s all I knew about her before I watched it. After watching it, I saw that Maka is much more than a bookworm, but is caring, strong, and determined. She is constantly worried about Soul, since he would take any hit in place of her. She wishes he would let her take care of herself, so he doesn’t get hurt in place of her. She wants to increase her skills so she doesn’t have to rely on him for protection. She always wants to learn more, and to do better than she already is. I’ve heard some people find these things about her annoying, but I think she’s just looking out for her partner.

Shirayuki (Snow White with the Red Hair)

shirayuki

This show doesn’t get enough recognition. As well as the main character, Shirayuki, who is supposed to be a form of Snow White. There are similar traits between Snow White and Shirayuki, but not many. The main one I see is they both are loved by many people. Shirayuki is hard-working, and kind to everyone she meets. She gives people second-chances and believes they can change their ways to make themselves better people. I love how accepting and open-minded she is, as well as being so determined to commit to something, she does everything she can to achieve it.

Celty Sturluson (Durarara!)

celty

Celty is by far my favorite character from Durarara! She’s so unique, and her design was very creative. She initially comes off as being the mysterious dark character, but in the end is very kind and wary of her impact on others. She knows that she can be the cause of trouble at times, and does her best to reduce it. So many people are interested in her (being an Irish fairy without a head and all) but she hates having so much attention on her and wishes to live a peaceful life. It’s cool to see someone who is so different from others still manage to live as a normal person, and it’s very impressive.

Winry Rockbell (Fullmetal Alchemist)

Winry1

I’ve already done a post about Winry, but it was my first one and I doubt anyone has read it. So, I’ll explain myself here instead. Winry is a great character, due to her profession, caring nature, and determination. She’s a mechanic, which at the time period of the show was rare. While it has a World War 2 vibe about it, there are still few women shown with a profession that requires physical strength. Majority of the military were men, and all of the other mechanics excluding her grandmother were also men. Her talent is insane for her age as well, and her determination to make a better piece every time she updates Ed’s automail is admirable. She also is incredibly caring toward the brothers, worrying about them as they leave her behind. Overall, Winry is a sweet mechanic who deserves love.

Ochako Uraraka (My Hero Academia)

uraraka

I’ve seen Uraraka at the very bottom of people’s favorite My Hero Academia character lists, and I’ve never understood why. Sure, there are many other characters that are shown more throughout the show, but I’ve always been fond of Uraraka from the moment she came on the screen. She’s supportive of Izuku always, and will sacrifice herself so others can succeed. She always puts others first, even though she wants to be a hero just as badly as the others. Plus, she’s just a cute, bubbly girl, and who can hate that?

Kaede Kayano (Assassination Classroom)

kayano

Another character that I’ve always been fond of. Though, there was a moment I doubted her, but I won’t get into that for those of you who haven’t watched season two. Kayano was the first one to approach Nagisa during the new school year, and was very open to him. She’s friendly, and makes a good effort to help the others in their goals, even if her ideas fall flat. Though there’s another side to her (which again I won’t get into), I love her all the same. She learns from her mistakes and grows further as a person.

San (Princess Mononoke)

San

I just cosplayed as San on Saturday for Motor City Con in Detroit, so it’s pretty clear that I admire her. Princess Mononoke is my favorite Studio Ghibli film, as I explained in Top 5 Studio Ghibli Films, and though San is technically not the main character and is absent for much of the beginning, her screen time was not wasted. She is firm in her beliefs, and nobody can shake her from them. She lives among wolves, which has made her strong and fierce. Also, results in her hatred for humans, but love for nature. She knows the forest spirits by name, and protects them with her life. I think of her as the Japanese version of Disney’s Pocahontas, but much cooler.

Hiyori Iki (Noragami)

hiyori

I’m also working on a cosplay for Hiyori, though it won’t be ready until the fall. I feel that in the Noragami fandom, Hiyori is often overlooked. Everyone’s favorite tends to be Yato, which I can understand as he is the face of the show. But, Hiyori is really the main character, and much more amazing than most people realize. In her first encounter with a phantom, she didn’t hesitate to attack it before being told that she could be killed easily. And even after that, she still thrust herself in the heat of battle. All while in her school uniform. Her parents are also rich, being doctors and all, but this is easily forgettable because she breaks the rich girl stereotypes.

Honorable Mentions: Sophie Hatter (Howl’s Moving Castle), Riza Hawkeye (Fullmetal Alchemist), Touka Kirishima (Tokyo Ghoul)

I hope you liked my list, it was difficult to narrow it down to just ten. If you think there were others who should have made it on my list, feel free to leave me a comment, I love seeing other people’s opinions.

Again, I apologize for my hiatus. It was never intentional, it just happened. But, I should be back for good, and another post should be up this Friday, the 26th. School was bogging me down, and now that my college classes are over, I have much more free time. Also, I have joined OWLS, which will mean I can participate in the blog tours! I should have one for June’s tour, so look for me.
